Who was Basquiat? Who is Basquiat? Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American black artist of the eighties. At 27 years old he had already positioned itself on the top of the international galleries, collaborated with Andy Warhol, dated Madonna and abused of all known drugs. At that early age left us when he was a myth.

His painting, between primitivism and neo-expressionism, conveys strength and impatience, the despair of youth for learning and the excitement for trying all kinds of experiences. In Basquiat we can observe the influence of other artists, from the brushstrokes of de Kooning, the accumulations of Robert Rauschenberg, calligraphies of Cy Twombly and even traces of informality of Dubuffet.

His start in graffiti art influences over their work. However, some critics deny this, arguing that their are not painted graffiti, but messages in the form of poetry that Basquiat left in the city walls, in those years when he voluntarily left the family nest and under the condition of young black and latino descent without resources, he linked to the world of bands where started throwing their messages to the world in the form of pure poetry as a cryptic, satirical and philosophical language emerged directly from the street. However, the transition from the street to the canvas it is now regarded as its most brilliant period: graffiti signs that mix with street visions and symbolic forms of primitive cultural traditions, such as masks, skeletons and skulls, very instinctive content. We must also note the influence had on Basquiat at six years old the book Gray's Anatomy, which studied after suffering an accident.

Meanwhile, the market has raised his name in opposition to Keith Haring, post-pop artist graffiti  roots, a solid artistic training, unlike Basquiat, who only briefly went through some art schools. However, Basquiat reached the consideration of best black artist in a period of eight years during the decade of the eighties and the unusual numbers that have reached their work in recent auctions, reaching paid over $ 48 million for his "Dustheads".

The themes of his paintings deals with current and historical social reality and the inherent human obsessions: "Irony of Black Policeman" (1981) is a critique of the dominance of white control over African Americans; in "History of the Black people " identifies the Egyptian people that the African people as the cradle of Western civilization; the most significant aspect of" Untitled Skull "are the eyes, looking down, conveying a mixture of sadness and fear, clear example of spontaneity and experimental style Jean-Michel.

His friend Julian Schnabel filmed a movie about his life, trying to get closer now, their experiences and the world revolved around the artist.

One final note: the idea of ​​immortality. When a paternal Warhol appeared reproached drug abuse, Basquiat said: "Do not worry, I'm immortal".

A los 27 años de edad ya había logrado situarse en el mapa de las galerías a nivel internacional, colaborado con Andy Warhol, salido con Madonna y abusado de todas las drogas conocidas. A esa temprana edad nos dejó, marcando la definitiva consagración del mito.

Pero más allá de su controvertida vida, nos queda su obra, una obra a caballo entre el neoxpresionismo y el primitivismo. Su pintura reboza fuerza e impaciencia, el desespero de la juventud por aprender y la excitación de probar todo tipo de experiencias. En Basquiat advertimos fácilmente la influencia de otros artistas, desde los brochazos de De Kooning, las acumulaciones en las obras de Robert Rauschenberg, visos de las caligrafías de Cy Twombly e incluso trazos del informalismo de Dubuffet.

Sus comienzos en el arte del grafiti influye a lo largo de su trabajo. A pesar de ello, algunos críticos reniegan de ello argumentando que sus pintadas no son grafitis, sino mensajes en forma de poesía que Basquiat dejaba en muros y paredes de la ciudad, en aquellos años en los que, por voluntad propia, abandonó el nido familiar y, bajo la condición de joven, negro y ascendencia latina sin recursos, se vinculó al mundo de las bandas con las que comenzó a lanzar sus mensajes al mundo en forma de pura poesía como un lenguaje críptico, satírico y filosófico surgido directamente de la calle. Sin embargo, la transición de la calle al lienzo, en la actualidad se considera como su época más brillante: grafitis con signos que se mezclan con visiones callejeras y formas simbólicas de tradiciones culturales primitivas, como máscaras, esqueletos y calaveras, de contenido muy directo, muy instintivo. Advertir también la influencia que causó en Basquiat a los seis años de edad el libro Anatomía de Gray, en el cual se sumergió tras haber sufrido un accidente.

Por otro lado, el mercado ha levantado su nombre en contraposición al de Keith Haring, artista post-pop de raíces grafiteras, de una sólida formación artística, al contrario que Basquiat, quien solo atravesó fugazmente algunas escuelas de arte. A pesar de ello, Basquiat alcanzó en tan solo ocho años la consideración de mejor artista negro de los ochenta y una notoriedad en el panorama del arte inusitada. Como poco habituales son las cifras que han alcanzado sus obras en las últimas subastas, llegando a pagarse más de 48 millones de dólares por su “Dustheads”.

La temática de sus lienzos aborda la actual e histórica realidad social y las inherentes obsesiones del ser humano: “Irony of Negro Policeman” (1981) es una crítica al predominio del control de la raza blanca sobre los afroamericanos; en “History of the Black People” identifica al pueblo egipcio como aquel pueblo africano cuna de la civilización occidental; el aspecto más significativo de "Untitled Skull" son los ojos, mirando hacia el suelo, transmitiendo una mezcla de tristeza y miedo, ejemplo claro de la espontaneidad y estilo experimental de Jean-Michel.

Su amigo Julian Schnabel filmó una película sobre su vida, tratando de acercarnos el momento, sus vivencias y el mundo que giraba en torno al artista.

Un último apunte: la idea de su inmortalidad aparecía como pretexto cada vez que un Warhol paternal le recriminaba el abuso de las drogas: “No te preocupes, soy inmortal” –Baquiat dixit-.
